Cloud Gate

Cloud Gate, more commonly known as “The Bean,” is one of Chicago’s most recognizable landmarks. It was installed in Millennium Park in 2004. The sculpture was designed by British artist Anish Kapport as part of a broader effort to transform the area into a cultural gathering space. The statue is made of highly polished stainless steel plates, seamlessly welded together. The sculpture reflects the city’s skyline and the people who gather around it; it makes Chicago itself part of the artwork.

The sculpture’s official name is Cloud Gate, which is a reference to its inspiration: the shifting forms of clouds and the sky above the city. Weighing over 100 tons, the piece appears fluid despite its massive scale. Its mirror-like surface invites interaction, encouraging visitors to walk around and beneath, especially through the underside known as the “omphalos,” where reflections multiply and distort.

Cloud Gate emerged during a period when Chicago was reasserting itself as a city of public art and innovative design. Millennium Park itself is built atop former rail yards, which represents a reimagining of urban space. The Bean quickly became the park’s focal point. Beyond its visual impact, the Bean has become a social symbol. It serves as a meeting point, a backdrop for photos, and a shared experience for residents and tourists. The sculpture’s reflective surface flattens everything around it, placing individuals, skyscrapers, and the sky on the same plane.

Author Review:

I’ve visited the Bean countless times over the course of my life, and it never loses its appeal. No matter how busy Millennium Park is, there’s something so fun about seeing the city reflected at you in such a surreal way. Every visit feels slightly different depending on the time of day, the weather, or the crowd around it. It’s completely free, centrally located, and impossible to miss, which makes it one of the most accessible pieces of art in Chicago. From DePaul, it is a 28-minute trip down the red line, right off Lake. If you’re not a fan of crowds I suggest going earlier in the morning. It’s definitely worth a visit for anyone living in Chicago!
