Honors Publications FAQ

The Honors Blog houses independent, student-run blog series. Students who are interested in creating their own blog series will come up with a topic or idea and then work with our student blog editors to draft and submit posts for their series. Students can create a blog series about whatever topic they want: from science and history, to music and movie reviews, to fictional stories, the possibilities are truly endless!

The general goal of the blog is to create a space where you can focus on writing and creating pieces that resonate with you, and leave the technicalities of editing, posting, and promotion to us!

If you are interested in starting your own blog series, please tell us your idea here! Once you fill out the interest form, a blog editor will be in touch with you shortly to walk you through the next steps, which include submitting a sample piece for your series.

Yes! Students earn 1 Honors point for every piece they submit to their own series.

It can! Honors Leadership can be earned by publishing a total of 10 pieces to any combination of Honors publications. Creating your own blog series is a great way to not only rack up Honors Points, but to also try for Honors Leadership!

In order to remain active, a series contributor must submit at minimum three pieces to their series every quarter. If a series contributor fails to submit at least three pieces in a quarter, their series may be removed from the blog.

Due to limited space and editorial workload, the Honors Blog can house no more than 20 student series at a time. If you are interested in starting your own series but there are already 20 active series being published, our editors will work with you to place you on a waitlist and follow up with you in later quarters.

Yes! For students looking to publish to the blog but don’t want the commitment of their own series, we are always seeking Honors Course Reviews. To learn more about publishing an HON course review to Honors, fill out this interest form, and a blog editor will be in touch with you shortly!

Honorable Mentions is a quarterly magazine created by Honors students, for Honors students. We accept non-fiction pieces, creative writing, artworks, and more!

Honorable Mentions accepts all kinds of creative, journalistic, and non-fiction submissions. From written pieces like short stories and poetry, media reviews, or current events, to artistic submissions like drawings, photography, and more, Honorable Mentions is designed to be a collective of unique student work.

Each quarter, the contributors and editors of Honorable Mentions choose a theme. Our only requirement is that pieces relate in some way to the theme of the issue and stay around 300 words or so.

Yes! Students earn 1 Honors point for every piece they submit to Honorable Mentions.

Yes! There are two ways to earn Honors Leadership by participating in Honorable Mentions. The first way is to apply for and successfully serve as an Honorable Mentions editor for a full academic year.

Applications to serve as an Honorable Mentions Editor typically open in spring.

Honorable Mentions Editor is a paid leadership position.

The other route to leadership via Honorable Mentions is to be a consistent contributor. Publishing 10 pieces to any combination of Honors publications earns you Honors Leadership.

At the start of each quarter, we will send out emails and Instagram posts informing Honors students that submissions are open. Simply respond to those communications to let us know you are interested, and we will follow up with more information! Or better yet, attend one of our in-person meetings to meet the editors and learn more!

You can also tell us that you are interested by filling out the interest form here. Someone will reach out to you shortly!

Yes! While attending Honorable Mentions meetings are not necessary to contribute to the newsletter, stopping by meetings is a great way to meet the editors, collaborate with your fellow contributors, and learn more about publishing opportunities in Honors!

Attending Honorable Mentions meetings earns 1 Honors Point.
