Newberry Library Undergraduate Seminar

The Culture of Paper: Investigating a World-Changing Medium

Instructors: Nina Dubin, Associate Professor of Art History, University of Illinois Chicago, and Nora Epstein, Instruction and Outreach Librarian, Newberry Library

This seminar surveys episodes in the early modern significance of paper, examining its disruptive, seductive, and dynamic faculties as embodied in a global array of objects in the collection of the Newberry Library. Both as a group and in independent research, we will question how something as ubiquitous as paper can serve as a valuable framework for understanding the relationship between people and their environment, how this material reflected the lives of its users and creators and how it shaped the early modern period.

This semester-long course is an opportunity for upper-level undergraduates to participate in an intensive seminar and produce an original research project using the world-renowned collections of the Newberry Library. Five DePaul students will be selected by application process for a course that runs from January to May 2026. Participating DePaul students will earn 9 credits split across two disciplines in winter and spring quarters. Participation can be used to satisfy the Liberal Studies “Experiential Learning” requirement.

APPLICATION DEADLINE | OCTOBER 15, 2025. 11:59PM
