I Love You Baby, I Love You Doll

Hey y’all, and welcome back from break

My name is Andrea Juarez Hernandez, and I’m a senior at DePaul University majoring in
animation. While I’m not formally educated in the musical arts, I’m passionate about the diverse
music genres I enjoy.

These monthly blogs will include song recommendations and amateur lyrical analyses
based on my interpretations.

For January, I decided to start with a love song. You might wonder why. Well, as we step
into a new year, we’re “breaking up and evolving” away from 2024 (January is also statistically
the month when most couples break up).

“I Love You Baby, I Love You Doll” is a song by the duo Parekh & Singh. Nischay Parekh provides vocals, guitar, keyboards, and synths, while Jivraj Singh handles drums, drum machines, and effects. The song is from their 2018 album Ocean (Deluxe), one of my favorite albums. It falls under the dream pop music genre. The duo is from Kolkata, India, and is signed to Peacefrog Records, managed by Big Bad Wolf Entertainment.

Now to the lyrics:

Monday come slowly, I feel a bit out of touch
With all this daily heartache it hurts me so much
I cannot help it if I’m hard to love
There are things about me that you don’t know, I don’t like acting tough
You can be serious and I can be mysterious
Share my feelings everyday but you’ll just smile at me and say
I love you baby and I love you doll
Times they get tough but my heart won’t change at all
I love you baby and I love you doll
Tuesday come gently I feel a little blue
I used to shine deep bright red when I was with you
Then everything changed only I stayed the same
All my blue skies turned to grey and all my flowers turned away
You can be serious and I can be mysterious
Share your feelings every day but you’ll just smile at you and say
I love you baby and I love you doll
Times get tough but my heart won’t change at all
I love you baby and I love you doll
It’s too hard
To stay awake
So I’ll just
Dream away my days
Well I’m not the kind of guy you fall in love with
I’m not the kind of guy that you share your heart with
I’ll just smile at you and say
I love you baby and I love you doll
Times they get tough but my heart won’t change at all
I love you baby and I love you doll
Times they get tough but my heart won’t change at all
I love you baby and I love you doll
I love you baby and I love you doll
Times they get tough but my heart won’t change at all
I love you baby and I love you doll

Analysis:

The song is upbeat and cheery, but a closer look at the lyrics reveals otherwise. There’s a
struggle between staying and letting go. The opening verse sets a melancholic tone on a
Monday—a day when few are in high spirits. The artist acknowledges a persistent struggle in the
relationship, with heartache becoming a daily occurrence.

The lyrics reflect a lack of communication between partners, defaulting to the autopilot
response of “I love you,” without addressing the underlying struggles. There’s a recognition of
love but no clarity on how to resolve the issues.

This reminded me of the article “Making Sense and Moving On: The Potential for
Individual and Interpersonal Growth Following Emerging Adult Breakups” by Jessica Kansky
and Joseph P. Allen, particularly the segment on attachment theory. It suggests that we form
strong emotional attachments to our romantic partners similar to those we develop with our
caregivers and parents. This concept is evident in the lyrics, where the artist shows a strong
attachment to their partner. Despite unresolved struggles, it’s difficult to let go because love
remains certain.

This song remains one of my favorites from their 2018 album alongside “Me & You”
and “Ocean”. If you wish to dive more into Parekh & Singh you can find them on all streaming
