Demystifying Honors: Events Offered by Honors

If you’re on the Honors Hub, then chances are you’re well aware of how many events and opportunities are offered by the Honors Program. Over the course of a year, Honors holds speaking events, conferences, workshops, focus groups, group outings, watch parties–you name it. Our mission with all of our events is to encourage students to broaden their horizons and connect with other members of the DePaul community.

If you’re interested in getting involved with these Honors events–and you should, since participation earns you Honors Points–then perhaps you would like to learn more about the recurring events in our program. Stay tuned to the Honors Hub throughout the year to learn more about these events as they take place.

Donuts with the Director

Donuts with the Director is a weekly opportunity for students to sit down and chat with Dr. Jennifer Conary over a selection of breakfast pastries and desserts. For the Fall Quarter, this event takes place on Tuesdays from 9:00-10:00 in the Honors Lounge.

Honorable Mentions Meetings

This year, the Honorable Mentions editors are holding group meetings every other Wednesday from 3:30-4:30 in A&L 106. At these meetings, writers and editors brainstorm and pitch pieces for the quarterly publication.

Express Advising

Express Advising takes place a few times over a quarter, usually at the start of the quarter and around the time course carts open. At these times, students can walk in to meet with an advisor with no prior appointment required.

HSG Meetings

Honors Student Government holds a Friday meeting every month where board members discuss upcoming activities, changes in the program, and any student concerns or questions.

Student Competitions

Every month, the Honors Program holds a different competition for students. This month, we held a competition to design a sticker for Honors advisors. Past competitions have included a pin design competition, a March Madness bracket, and a coloring book competition. Students are sometimes eligible to win gift cards or other prizes for winning.

Food with Faculty

Food with Faculty is a quarterly social event held in Arts and Letters where students can meet up and converse with Honors professors over different appetizers and hors d’oeuvres. This quarter’s Food with Faculty event will take place September 27 from 5:30-6:30.

Book Club

Usually once a quarter, the Honors Program will hold a book club facilitated by an Honors professor. Past book club meetings include Pride and Prejudice led by Professor Conary and The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson led by Professor Mikos. Going to a book club meeting also automatically enrolls you in a raffle for a free book.

Professional Help/Career Development Workshops

Throughout the year, members of the Honors faculty will lead workshops to help students hone important professional skills like interview preparation, resume writing, and job hunting.

Field Trips

The Honors Program will schedule some group outings over the academic year. Trips have gone to the Art Institute, the Lincoln Park Zoo, and the Goodman and Steppenwolf Theaters, for example. These events usually have a cap on how many students can attend, so it’s best to RSVP early.

Honors Ball

At the end of the year, HSG always organizes a dance for Honors students and their guests. It’s held in Cortelyou Commons and the theme of the event changes every year. A committee meets during Spring Quarter to help determine the theme as well as organize and design the event.

Honors Conference

The Honors Conference is another annual tradition of the Honors Program and one of the real highlights of the Program. At the end of the year, students have the opportunity to present a research project or a senior thesis to a group of their peers and professors in an all-day event that takes place in Arts and Letters.

There are of course other events taking place in the Honors Program like guest speaker visits and book talks, but these are the events that take place every year and of which you as a student should try to take advantage.
