For many, Apple Cider is a fun treat, an indicator of Autumn’s presence – but this warm, spiced juice has a lot of history that gets overlooked. Originally, this beverage was drunk in many homes due to it being cheap and easy to produce. Apple Cider played a consistent part in many Americans’ lives until Prohibition, when many apple orchards switched to apples that could not be fermented, resulting in the non-alcoholic seasonal cider we drink today. Personally, I’m a big fan of Apple Cider, so I’d like to encourage everyone to grab some if they get the chance and have a cute fall moment.
For a classic warming cider consider checking out Levain’s bakery! About a 15 minute walk from the Lincoln Park Campus this bakery offers a wide selection of hand crafted pastries that will pair excellently with your cider.
For a tall cup of cider with an amazing spice blend, check out Bourgeois Pig Cafe! With delightful interior and exterior seating, you can sip on your cider and enjoy the well-crafted atmosphere of this cafe, and it’s only a 10-minute walk from the Lincoln Park Campus!
If you prefer to buy your cider in bulk, you can find a number of options at farmers markets throughout the city! Linked below are two farms that sold their cider at this year’s Apple Festival and the farmers markets you can find them at.

In making time for what might seem like an arbitrary experience, such as a trip to the cafe, we take ownership of our joy. Our lives are made of many little moments, and we get the chance to choose how they are spent, so why not fill those moments with something warm and tasty? If you participate in a bit of cafe culture this fall, I doubt you’ll regret it!
