Welcome to Sustaining Our City!

This series is dedicated to environmental conservation and practical actions we can take as college students to uphold our community’s beauty. Chicago as a major city has poured significant legislative effort into protecting its green spaces and environmental quality. Practically, however, these policies only go so far without mass effort. Conservation cannot be a minority practice; we must work together to care for this space. In college, these practices can be anything but convenient. Recycling is not easily accessible, convenient food options produce lots of plastic waste, and we generally have our focus glued on other commitments, being full-time students and likely working on top of school. Living in this city is a temporary condition for many of us, but our daily actions have effects on this environment that will last far longer than our collegiate careers. Even amidst the challenges that come with sustainable practices, it is our responsibility as residents of this beautiful city to protect its glory.
The good news is, these conscious actions and choices are far more accessible and much easier than expected. Through this series, we’ll explore together the many options we have as students in the city to participate in Chicago’s protection. From organizations to support, and recycling opportunities available, to personal lifestyle choices that promote sustainability, the options to pursue conservation are plentiful. Join me this year as I explore these options myself and share them all with you!
