Candles & Bombs

There was never a moment in my life where I didn’t feel a sense of love for something. Whether that be my mom, dad, friends, spinach, first grade crush, books, movies, you name it! I’ve been full of love since I came into this world. However, as it turns out, hate is what I am met with. If love is a candle, then hate is a bomb- it morphs a controlled fire into a beacon of destruction, yet they are of the same kind. When I think of love, I think of hot summer days on an old helicopter pad, lighting off fireworks with my family. Or frigid bones, warming up near the fireplace after sledding with friends on a snow day. Love is the subtle warmth of joy you get when those who truly matter to you are near. But hate, hate burns brighter, with the intensity of a thousand loves. Hate is only truly felt when experiencing something that would never have
deserved to happen. Hate takes the place of love and lights a cannon instead of a birthday candle. Some might say that because hate is such a strong emotion, that it must be more important. But love knows that burning brighter and more intense does not mean it will burn longer. The candle of love is only blown out after a last breath. The candle of love burns inside you your entire life, the warmth encasing you even in the hardest of days. The bomb might explode, but the candle is only ready to leave you when you are.
