Honorable Mentions Editor – Leadership Position Description
The DePaul University Honors Program is committed to producing a quality, quarterly newsletter created by and for its students. The Honorable Mentions newsletter provides a forum for announcements and information about Honors activities and students, serves as a voice for student and faculty views on important issues, and provides opportunities for displaying the creative and academic works of Honors students. Editors are responsible for the production of the newsletter. This includes planning and contributing content, soliciting work from student contributors, designing the layout of the newsletter, and working with student contributors to meet deadlines and produce three newsletters per academic year. The editor position is a year-long commitment.
The Content Editor is responsible for working closely with student contributors to develop and create pieces for contribution. They must plan and organize pieces for the newsletter and thoroughly edit each piece and the entire newsletter to ensure no errors. They also work closely with the Layout Editor to draft, create, and publish the final draft of each quarter’s Honorable Mentions. They lead and follow the creative, aesthetic vision for the publication set forth by the Layout Editor.
Eligibility
Honors Students of all class standings are eligible to apply. Preference is given to candidates who have contributed to Honorable Mentions in the past. Applicants must be enrolled in classes for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Position Responsibilities and Expectations
- Work with a team of student contributors to plan and produce one newsletter per quarter (Fall, Winter, Spring)
- Develop ideas for creative stories and interesting articles
- Solicit work from Honors students
- Participate in regular Honorable Mentions editor check-ins
- Possess excellent communication and time management skills
- Contribute articles as needed
- Review and edit student contributions
- Set deadlines and maintain follow-ups with student contributors
- Meet with student contributors when needed to assist with articles
- Use Canva, Flipsnack, and other design programs to design the quarterly newsletter
Stipend
Honorable Mentions Editors receive a $250 stipend in the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.
Required Application Materials
- This completed application
- A letter of intent stating your qualifications for the position and vision for the newsletter
- 2-3 examples of your creative, original, or academic writing
- (optional) 1-2 examples of any graphic design work you have ever done (this can include powerpoint presentations, flyers, visual class projects, etc.)
