Goodbyes are always
the hardest part of starting something new.
A new year of college
brings another round of goodbyes
as friends return to the places
they’re now learning to call home.
They venture into the semester,
taking on new aspirations and goals,
filling weeks with work,
finding comfort in both solitude and community.
And, before they know it,
the summer heat gives way
to a steady breeze.
The time for shorts and swimming
turns into flannels and coffee walks
under a canopy of amber and marigold.
With a crisp bite in the air,
they raise their heads from
the monotony of the semester.
They file into cars and planes
all to head back to their commonplace.
When those first wheels hit the tarmac,
that car gets put in park, the text is sent.
A group chat once dormant awakens.
And the moments of life the group of friends
once referred to as nostalgic
become a brief period of normal.
