Love Across Time

“Love Across Time” by Abby Kane

You and I were not made for this day and age.
Our love is not one to be told
through quick text messages—
through ILYs and <3’s.
A love this deep was meant
for handwritten letters
sent back and forth,
enduring time and obstacles along the journey,
yet still remaining strong
throughout the time in between.
The words in my heart were destined
to be immortalized through swooping, swirling calligraphy,
carefully inked onto weathered parchment,
my name signed lovingly at the bottom
as a declaration that I am yours.
Each one would live in a special place—
a box under my bed,
a compartment in my heart.
Your carefully crafted words carry me along
until I hear your voice again.
Our love is a time machine—
it takes me back through all the past lives
where you and I have already found each other.
Anyone can love in the present.
Only some can make it last to the future.
But who except us
can love across time—
feel each other so deeply,
like we’ve known each other
since before either of us even existed?
I’d go back in time
just to start a future with you.
Whether we declare our love
on stone walls,

on weathered parchment,
on post-it notes,
over phone calls,
or face to face,
no amount of space or time between us
is enough to truly keep us apart.
I am every version of myself
and I have loved every version of you.
They live in us and we lived in them.
I feel sure that I have loved you before—
because how else would it be
so effortless?
Like we’ve held hands for years,
long enough for them to mold perfectly together.
Like I’ve said your name a thousand times over,
to the point where it feels more natural on my tongue than my own.
Like I’ve asked you the same questions in every lifetime
and the answers never change,
but I still get to know you all over again.
And in every lifetime,
if you ask
“Do you love me?”
my answer will never change either.
I love you now,
I loved you then,
And I will love you forever.
Surely, in one of those times,
you must love me too.
