Calling all film lovers! Maddie Voelkel, a junior documentary film student at DePaul and campus ambassador for film production and distribution company NEON, and Asia Thomas, head of the DEI committee of Delta Kappa Alpha at DePaul, would like to invite you to an exciting event planned for Black History Month.
They will be screening NEON’s newest film Origin, followed by a discussion led by writer and political science associate professor Valerie Johnson, as well as filmmaker and adjunct professor Raphael Nash about the film and its theories.
Origin follows Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson’s real-life journey to write her seminal book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” amidst a series of personal tragedies. Her book takes on the theory of the unspoken caste system in America and has been described as “the keynote nonfiction book of the American century thus far,” attempting to change how racism is viewed in America and how oppression is viewed all over the world. The “documentary like” film adaptation, directed by Ava DuVernay who is known for Selma (2014), 13th (2016), and When They See Us (2019),stars Aunjanue Ellis, Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash, and Audra McDonald. Their powerful performances, and DuVernay’s expert directing, capture the significance of Wilkerson’s research. The film spans different countries and hundreds of years of history to remind us of where we come from.
The event will take place Monday, February 19th from 5:30-8:30 pm in McGowan South 108, on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus.
