One of the leadership opportunities an Honors student can take advantage of during their time in the Program is being an Honors Advocate. What you may have previously heard referred to as Honors Mentors, Advocates are responsible for guiding incoming freshmen through the transition to college life. They meet with students, give advice, answer questions, and establish the expectations of DePaul. One Honors Advocate, Jess Correa, wrote to us explaining what the position means to them.

“Hello, my name is Jess, and I am one of this year’s Honors Advocates. My job is to assist and act as a mentor for freshmen in the honors program, particularly for those who major in Animation and Game Design. As an animation major who is in the honors program and a commuter, I didn’t have a mentor that I could talk about all three with. And so I thought, what if I could become a mentor where I can talk about my experience and help freshmen who are just stepping into college life. I also wanted to be able to relay any and all tips and information I wish I was told my freshmen year. Thus far I have done a few meetings to reflect on how DePaul has been so far as well as in regard to winter quarter classes. I have also been sending emails on weekly events and reminders they should keep note of since I feel that it’s important to have a balance between academics and social life. Many of the conversations I’ve had with my mentees have always been about how they appreciated the help or that they are interested in the club I am a part of called the 50/50 Club and other things. It makes me happy that they are comfortable emailing me or asking me a question about an event, school, life on campus, and more. I really enjoy being an honors advocate and if I were to have the opportunity to apply again for next year, I would definitely do it, hands down. “
If being an Honors Advocate sounds like something you would be interested in, consider applying! More information about dates and training requirements usually comes out every Spring Quarter and Advocates are expected to devote time during the summer to help plan for the start of the school year. Honors Advocates receive Honors Leadership, one of the three tiers of Honors Distinction!
