The Loop Campus is my all-time favorite place to be. I always feel like I get
astronomical amounts of work done downtown. As a study enthusiast and chronic busy
person, here are my top five Loop study spots that get your work ethic on overdrive:
Harold Washington Library 9th Floor
- If you take a short 2 minutes from the DePaul Center, you will run into the largest
library in Chicago. Named the Harold Washington Library after mayor Harold
Washington, the library offers a variety of different study spots, but most notable is
the 9th floor’s Winter Garden. Offering an ambient environment with natural
greenhouse lighting, the Winter Garden is a great place to connect with nature in an
otherwise obsolete and circular pattern of studying indoors under florescent lights.
Be sure to come in either at odd hours or early in the morning as the Winter Garden
is extremely popular and can be hard to find a seat.
Block 37
- If you study best in a social environment, take the Red Line to Howard back to State
where you will be spit out right into Block 37, a popular urban retail development.
Block 37 has 5 levels with adequate seating along escalators that allow for
opportunities for unbothered studying. Personally, I thrive best amongst other
studiers, but not in complete silence. Block 37 allows for students to experience the
social thrill of Chicago, while also studying in an unbothered location with access to
different foods and things to do during their much-needed study break. Be careful
not to spend too much money though!
DePaul Center Terrace
- Much like the Harold Washington Winter Garden, the DePaul Center’s Terrace
gives you a breath of fresh air to study with. With a spectacular view and
comfortable seating options, the terrace (when it’s open) is the perfect place to
escape the buildings for a little bit and spend some time outdoors while
reviewing for your next quiz.
Hero Coffee Bar
- For a short-term study option, try Hero Coffee Bar right across the street from
the DePaul Center. Enjoy a delicious bagel and iced coffee while doing your next
assignment. Working in the small cut-out seating area makes it easy to focus,
and the food adds a special treat for your efforts. Hero is a popular spot for get
together and brunch, so if you do find a seat to settle in it’s your lucky day!
Pritzker Park
- Finally, to finish up a book or quick essay check out Pritzker Park just a short
walk from campus. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is a fun summer venue to watch
musical performances, but the Great Lawn is even better to sit in with a book
with the architectural beauty over you. Enjoy the warm weather while you can!
Being a student in the city is equally as overwhelming as it is exciting. Hopefully these five study spots can provide you with some peace from the stress of schoolwork.
